Tongue Action - James 3:3-5
Staring at my phone, I read and reread the words, again and again. They were twisted. They were convoluted. They were taken out of context. It would take energy and time that I did not currently possess to try and untangle this massive ball of a mess. What I had tried to “clear up” just ended up making things worse. Ugh! I started a response. Deleted it. Started another response. Deleted that one. Finally, I just texted, “I’m sorry.” Anyone else ever have one of these types of conversations?
A bit; a rudder; and a tongue are all small and but mighty. Each controls something MUCH larger than itself. God used words to create the world. He spoke and creation came into being. Wow! Since God made us in His image and He gave us a tongue, knowing the full capacity of it, I believe it needs a whole lot more attention than what we currently give it. Women speak an average of 20,000 words a day, Men 7,000 words and this is not counting the written ones. In this digital, connected age words fly back and forth through the air both verbally and digitally. Not only can we verbally create or destroy with words, we can instantly use our words on anyone at anytime, anywhere through digital means. It seems to me the power of our words has become exponentially important.
I love words! I love constructing meaningful phrases and colorful sentences that draw my readers in. Like any writer, I probably give this more thought than the average person. However, I also have moments where I am not thinking and carelessly use words without giving much thought to the impact. . Anyone else do this? As I’ve pondered the power of my tongue, I’ve added a new section to my prayers. Here it is, “Lord, I surrender my tongue to you.” Simple, yet so powerful. Will you join me in adding this to your conversations with your Maker?”
